Movies With Heat
...of some kind or other!

Things That Turn Us On
Sometimes it's the simple things that do it for us. It isn't always that blatant sex scene in a movie that gets our blood flowing. It's not always the perfect face or the god-like physique of the leading man that excites us. (I love the crooked lips and protruding jaw on Willem Defoe.) It can be the mundane things; the unassuming things that make up the scenery of every day life that attract our attention.

So it was in making the 1975 film ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Ellen Burstyn and Kris Kristofferson. In a recent interview with Terry Gross, on NPR's FRESH AIR, Ellen revealed she'd been concerned about Scorsese's direction of this emotionally complex film. Until this point, Scorsese's film career included Boxcar Bertha (1972), a blood-and-gore sequel to Roger Corman's Bloody Mama, and Mean Streets (1973) set in Little Italy about a young Italian American at odds with his seedy environment. Burstyn was wary of Scorsese's ability to handle a more conventional, commercial film with a feminist women's lib theme.

Burstyn asked the director if he knew anything about women. Scorsese said no, he didn't but he'd like to learn. Ellen then explained to him that seeing a man physically working turned her on. That's when the director created a scene where costar Kris Kristofferson would be repairing fences with his shirt off, slinging a hammer. "In this scene," Ellen mused, "you can see her (Alice) fall in love with him while watching him work. That's something a man would not know or think about."

Highlighting: LABYRINTH OF PASSION
Directed by Pedro Almodovar
Starring Cecilla Roth, Imanol Arias, Helga Line, Marta Fernandez-Muro, Angel Alcazar, Antonio Banderas, Agustin Almodovar

The sexual adventures of a nymphomaniac and the gay son of an emperor. The Spanish equivalent of an Andy Warhol movie: a delerious farrago of sex and psychobabble intended to shock and amuse! Halliwells' Film Guide

"The quintessential Spanish cult movie." Sight and Sound

Belle du Jour, French, directed by Luis Bunel, 1967. Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, Michael Piccoli, Genevieve Page.

A surgeon's wife finds herself drawn to afternoon work in a brothel. Fascinating, Bunel mixture of fact and fantasy, impeccably woven into a rich fabric.

"Oppressively powerful. Like being buried alive in Sarah Bernhardt's dressing room." Wilfred Sheed

"The rhythm of the writing, the color changes, acting tempos, camera angles, the whole editing - all this is perfect. There is not on extraneous shot, nor one that is missing. Disparate elements are embraced in a self-possessed, lucidly enchanting flow." John Simon

Bound - One of the best movies ever made. Corky and Violet make the coolest and the sexiest same-sex couple in the movie history. Joe Pantoliano gives a brilliant performance as a very doomed gangster, Ceasar. Brothers Wachowski reinvented film noir when they wrote and directed this stylish, skillfully crafted movie, just as they reinvented action movies with their second feature film - Matrix.
Boy's Don't Cry -based on a true story, this film introduces the audience to the fine lines between gender and sex.
Cynara (1999) "I had never encountered the concept of "Romantica" before but in this video the director has created what is one of the most lyrical visual experiences I've ever had. It is highly erotic, but what makes it so, is that there is a romantic build -- the element that is missing in all the erotica out there. It's beautifully shot and the music is haunting and beautiful." a pleased viewer

GIA, directed by Michael Cristofer
There's a reason why Cindy Crawford was dubbed "Baby Gia" when she first hit the modeling scene. Indeed, Crawford, now the world's best-known supermodel, greatly resembled model Gia Carangi, who went from high school to the cover of British Vogue in less than two years. Carangi appeared on many more covers of Vogue (French, British, Italian, and American) and Cosmopolitan before dying of complications from AIDs (she was an IV heroin user) in 1986. Now most people recognize Carangi's name from this powerful HBO film that stars Golden Globe-winner Angelina Jolie, who comes by her talent honestly. Jolie is the daughter of veteran actor Jon Voight, and her own training as a model serves her well--she has the moves. Throughout, she's heartbreaking--as no doubt the real Carangi was--effective, and stunning.

With good source material (Stephen Fried's A Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia), Jolie's stunning performance, and strong directing by Michael Cristofer, the movie goes beyond the merely sensational. The script was cowritten by Cristofer and novelist Jay McInerney, whose Bright Lights, Big City covers similar territory. As a cautionary tale, Gia works. But to watch Jolie in her character's tragicself-destruction is utterly compelling. --N.F. Mendoza

This unrated version contains six minutes of sexually explict footage not aired on HBO.

It is amazing that over a quarter of a century since its original release that Emmanuelle remains in the top three best selling French films on video. But is it so remarkable? Here we have a piece of pure eroticism which has scarcely been matched in all those years. Emmanuelle is not about explicit sexual action - those that buy it will be disappointed if that is what they expect, with the exception of the notorious nightclub smoking scene...
The Lover -What started purely as a "friendship of convenience" between the sexual urge of an "experienced" wealthy young Chinese man, and the "access-to-wealth feeling" urge of a nubile fresh somewhat poor French girl, does result in a slow and eventual "connection" between them.
Red Shoe Diaries 4 Auto Erotica - "Be careful when you're watching this movie! Especially when you're with other people. You'll ignite yourself! ;-) Anyway, three tales unfold in this steamy little set cobbled of three episodes from the steamy "Red Shoe Diaries" Showtime show. Scott Plank and David Duchovny are great in the sex scenes they do (not together, with other women!). The film is great for fans of this genre, and the sex is very steamy. If possible, buy the UNRATED version. I think it would be better." one pleased viewer
Red Shoe Diaries 3 - Another Woman's Lipstick (VHS) "I have been watching these for a while and we are not ever tired of them, they are done very nicely and very erotic for lovers only for sure" a viewer!
THERESE AND ISABELLE - "Considering the time period, I did not expect the depth of love or erotisism that this film so cleverly and masterfully has shown. If you have ever loved someone that is no longer in your life and have memories that haunt you, this movie has successfully depicted those thoughts and feelings.
